The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

On 66 acres of land on White Rock lake lies the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. It opened to the public in 1984, so the gardens are relatively new, but they are vast and beautiful! I have been to the Arboretum 3 times in my four weeks in Dallas and became a member for the year. I can't wait to go visit in different seasons to see all the different types of blooms. It is so beautiful!

Restaurant Review: Rise

A few days ago, my Mom and I decided to go to Trader Joe's to get a few things. I had never been and had heard great things, so I was excited to check it out! Before we went in, we decided to stop for lunch in the area. We stumbled up this restaurant called Rise which was in the same shopping center. It looked cool on the outside, but I was a bit skeptical having never heard anything about it. I was totally taken back as soon as we walked in the door. We were immediately greeted with an upbeat "Bonjour!" and I knew I loved it already. I am a total Francophile, loving everything French. The atmosphere was that of a cozy French country home with handmade ceramic plates, recycled wine bottles, French music, unique dishtowels for napkins, twinkle lights, stone walls...need I go on? They specialize in soufflés, which is where the name Rise came from, I assume. I ordered the Maryland Crab soufflé which tasted like a light and fluffy crab cake. For dessert, we shared the key lime soufflé which had fresh whipped cream and key lime infused sugar on top! So delicious! Oh and one more thing - we found out that Rise is a favorite of George and Laura Bush. Apparently, they eat there at least twice a month. So, if you are in the area, check it out! I will definitely be going back.

Moving to the Big D

The day has finally come - we are moving to Dallas! I will definitely miss Mississippi as it has been my home for almost my entire life. I have lots of family and friends there which will give me plenty of reasons to go back! I am excited to see what great things are in store for me and the rest of my family as we start fresh in a new place! Big cities have so many fun things to offer - great concerts, museums, ballet, opera, amazing restaurants and so much more! Everything's bigger in Texas, right??

Before I left, my friend Anne gave me the cutest Texas themed gift! She grew up in Texas, so she put together a few must-haves from the Lone Star State for me!

Texas State Flower Print by my friend Kristen at Thimblepress, Shiner Bock Beer (brewed in TX) and Daddy Sam's Texas BBQ Sauce. Anne also included a John Hart Airport Chico bag, but it had to be sent back to be customized with my initials!
Thanks Anne!!

Movie Review: Chef

I went to this movie hopeful, but unsure of what it was really about. All I knew was that it was supposed to be a "foodie movie." Besides all the scenes filled with beautiful and delicious looking food, it has a great story, fantastic music, and left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Jon Favreau plays Chef Carl Casper, a prominent chef in L.A. who quits his job after refusing to compromise his creative vision for the food he wants to cook. He travels to Miami with his ex-wife, played by Sofia Vergara, and his son, who he rarely spends quality time with. He then gets an old food truck and fixes it up with the help of his sous chef and his son. They head west to drive the truck back to L.A. stopping along the way to serve cuban food to masses of new fans. All the while, Carl and his son Percy have time to reconnect and bond over a love for cooking. I can not wait to go back and see this again. It has definitely joined the ranks of my top 10 favorite movies! Go see it!

I also highly recommend the soundtrack. It's full of upbeat, rhythmic Latin music that will make you want to dance and cook up a storm!

Aunt Julie's Blue Cheese Spread

My Aunt Julie invited me over for dinner and asked me if I had any special requests. The first thing I thought of was this blue cheese spread she had made for me once before. It is absolutely delicious and can be used in so many ways! She served it with crudités and crackers as an appetizer and then we used it as a spread on our grilled burgers. We especially loved it with the sliced cucumbers. If you like blue cheese, this is definitely worth making!
